7 Common PIM Software Myths Debunked

Here at Plytix we talk to retailers and manufacturers on the daily that have preconceived notions about Product Information Management (PIM) software that are just plain wrong. We understand though. There isn't a lot of good information out there, so we are here today to dispel some of these PIM myths we hear pretty regularly. 

 

PIM Myth 1: This is enterprise software

Well, okay, it WAS enterprise software. But this is a thing of the past. PIM is now software not for enterprise, but for companies large and small, established or starting out, that need a single source of truth for their product information. There are many options out there that accommodate all different needs when it comes to PIM systems. They can be as complex or as simple as you need them to be to get the job done.

 

PIM Myth 2: This is expensive software

Contrary to popular belief, PIM is no longer expensive software. The plethora of options means you can plan your budget before you shop for software and find something that fits your needs. 

Depending on the work you want to put in there are systems that are open source, and free, that you can customize. But for those looking for ready-to-use PIM systems, you can find them for as cheap as $9 per month

Some of you may be thinking, "Yeah, okay, but what about consultancy costs and hidden maintenance fees?" This is another staggering myth about PIM pricing that is outdated. Consultancy fees are not a mandatory part of using PIM software. 

 

PIM Myth 3: It's only good for thousands of SKUs

Maybe back in the day when each product required less data to sell, but today a product catalog of even 50 products may require hundreds of data points, plus related images and media. A PIM system helps you manage the complexity of your catalog regardless of the amount of SKUs you have. 

If you are just starting out, or looking to expand your product line, a PIM can also help you scale your operations efficiently. Starting early with a PIM sets you up for success by helping you avoid a product information migration frenzy.

PIM Myth 4: It's a tool for tech people

Oh no! This one is the worst misconception. This tool is for content people. PIM systems are fundamentally a business-user tool because it is designed to help manage the sales and marketing content created for products. You do not need a tech background, knowledge of coding or any kind of IT training to use a PIM successfully. 

 

PIM Myth 5: I don't need a PIM, we have everything in our ERP or Web Shop

We hear this one a lot. Technically you can keep everything in your ERP or webshop and get by, but why would you? It is kind of like telling yourself that it is okay to keep your lawn mower in the living room because the space exists, it fits, and you don't have a garage. 

A PIM gives your product content a proper place to be enriched, optimize, and distributed while an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning)  is specialized for logistics and managing lots of data points, but not necessarily sales material. A PIM actually works with an ERP system to deliver well-rounded, rich product content without sacrificing the strength of one software for the other.

Keeping things in your web shop, on the other hand, is shooting yourself in the foot. The content you create for your web shop cannot be easily reformatted to fit other marketplaces like Amazon. For this reason it is also likely that you also keep a lot of your content in local storage folders and spreadsheets.

You also lose the ability to maintain a real product record with all relevant attributes and product media. You severely limit the effectiveness of your product content when you create it for one channel and one channel only.

 

PIM Myth 6: It will take months to implement, we don't have time

More excuses, eh? As we mentioned before, all the new options for PIM means there are a lot of user friendly options that can get you up and running quickly and without training. PIM Myth 7: It has to be installed on premises

What are you, a dinosaur? The cloud is where it is at! Software as a Service (SaaS) has made it possible to securely store your product information online so that your data is accessible anywhere and everywhere. 

There are many PIM systems available for implementation as SaaS.  Check them out and start researching PIM systems that will solve your challenges.
